Ce lundi 2 mars 2015 le dj/producteur californien Jamie Charles sort son EP Counter Culture. Pour l’occasion on a parlé avec lui de sa musique et de la scène électro en Californie. Je vous fait découvrir un artiste talentueux et vraiment cool.

BastoElectro : Salut Jamie comment vas-tu ? Est-ce que tu peux te présenter pour toutes celles et tous ceux qui veulent en savoir plus sur toi ? D’ou viens-tu ?
How are you? I would like knowing more about you?
Jamie Charles : Salut ! Je viens d’une petite ville côtière d’Angleterre appelée Great Yarmouth. J’ai déménagé à Los Angeles il y a 10 ans et maintenant je vis à Santa Monica. Le temps est magnifique ici et je suis proche de l’océan.
I’m originally from a small seaside town in England called Great Yarmouth. I moved over to Los Angeles 10 years ago, and now reside in Santa Monica. Can’t beat the weather out here and being by the ocean.

I discover you on Soundcloud with your last tracks Counter Culture, could tell us about this track?
Je pense que dans cette production, il y a comme une atmosphère de désert : c’est la façon dont j’ai composé avec les basses, les cordes et les percussions. Très probablement, j’ai été influencé par mon expérience au Burning Man dans le désert du Nevada. Je suis vraiment fan de musique mystique, profonde avec des fonds sonores ethniques et couplés avec des samples. Je pense que c’est tout ça qui m’a influencé dans la création de ce morceau. Counter Culture est la principale track de mon EP qui sort aujourd’hui chez Draft Records (lundi 2 Mars 2015).
I think the track has a very desert vibe feel to it, what with the way of drums, strings and marimba, probably influenced from a recent trip out to Burning Man in the Nevada Desert ! I’m a big fan of deep mysterious tracks which have ethnic backgrounds and samples. I think this is what steered me in this direction for this track. Counter Culture is the main track on my upcoming EP which will be released March 2nd under Draft.
À mes yeux cette track révèle un incroyable talent et une forte expérience en tant que producteur, tu peux nous en dire un peu plus sur la relation que tu as avec la musique ?
To my mind this track reveal an incredible talent and background, could tell us your relation with music?
Ayant grandi en Angleterre je passais mon temps libre à écouter de la dance music et surtout à me déplacer dans tout le pays avec des amis en festival, en rave. Je faisais aussi beaucoup de free-parties dans des entrepôts et des champs dans le Sud-Est de l’Angleterre.
Ensuite, j’ai évolué avec la techno et un peu de drum & bass et puis ce fût au tour de la House et maintenant dans je produis de la tech-house.
Being brought up in England I spent a lot of my spare time in my teenage years obssesed with dance music, not only listening to but also travelling around on trains with friends every weekend going to the next big underground event or festival in a remote field or warehouse scattered around South East England. Back then it was happy hardcore, then techno/hard house, and bits of drum and bass, then house and the ever evolving deep dubby tech house sound i’m into today.

Since when did you start music?
Tout à commencer à 13 ans quand ma grande soeur m’a fait écouter une cassette de The Prodigy.
All started at the age of 13 when my older sister introduced me to a tape cassette of The Prodigy.

Ou vas-tu chercher tes inspirations, tes influences ?
What are your inspirations, your influences?
Il y en a beaucoup trop, il y a une telle quantité de musique incroyable et cela dans tous les genres possibles et inimaginables. Je peux être influencé par n’importe quel style de musique et n’importe quand.
J’ai grandi en écoutant The Essential Mix sur BBC Radio One et je suivais les Radio Shows de Pete Tong et Danny Rampling. J’étais toujours au rendez-vous pour découvrir l’artiste invité et je me tenais à jour en écoutant les nouveaux disques qui m’intéressaient que les djs jouaient.
J’étais aussi entouré d’amis qui ont commencé à produire de la bonne musique et ça m’a vraiment motivé à avancer dans cette direction.
There is so many of them, as there’s such huge amount of great music out there and all in different forms. I can be influenced by any type of music at any time.
I was brought up as a kid listening to and recording the Essential Mix on BBC Radio One and following the Radio Show’s with Pete Tong and Danny Rampling. I was always intrigued in the new artists being featured and trying to keep up to date with all the new artists whose sounds interested me.
I do also draw inspiration from witnessing other close friends taking their own music to the next level, and it definitely motivates me to keep working towards progressing as an artist.
J’ai bien l’impression que les producteurs et djs de Life and Death Records influencent beaucoup la nouvelle vague musicale de la côte ouest. Je pense à Dj Tennis et Tale of Us en particuliers… Tu peux nous donner ton point de vue sur la scène californienne ?
I think international djs as Tale of us or Dj Tennis inspiring the US West coast actually… Could tell us about your view on international scene?
C’est clair le label berlinois Life and Death a une notoriété mondiale et même sur la côte ouest des USA sans exception. Le public californien suit, écoute et aime les artistes du label. Ici en Californie, tu peux trouver des fêtes partout avec des djs mondialement connus toutes les semaines. Il y a vraiment un bon esprit mais l’époque underground est révolue.
Maintenant à L.A., il y a beaucoup plus d’évènements qu’avant en matière de festivals électronique, mais je reste nostalgique des fêtes que je faisais en Angleterre. Sinon, je suis assez content car je vais au Sonar à Barcelone cette année pour la première fois !
Yeah the whole Life And Death thing has a huge following worldwide, and over here on the west coast is no exception. There is a healthy underground scene over here, bringing in a lot of worldwide talent every week covering all the underground dance music genres, and your now spoilt for choice on a weekly basis with a lot of competing underground parties. I still think the best parties and vibe from what i have personally experienced is over in Europe, and being from England I miss the parties I used to most frequently attend, but LA is definitely catching up quick in terms of the events that are now being put on around the city. I’m looking forward to attending Sona for the first time this year in Barcelona.
Et donc à Los Angeles, il y a un public qui suit tout ça de prés ?
You are based in L.A. is the music you produce has a public?
Si tu sors souvent à ces soirées, tu vas vite t’apercevoir qu’il y a quasiment toujours les mêmes têtes.
Comparé à certaines villes d’Europe la scène est vraiment petite, on est quasiment entre amis. C’est pour ça qu’on teste notre musique entre nous et ensuite on propose notre musique a un plus large public. Ici on peut seulement espérer produire une musique de qualité pour capter et attirer des fans qui viennent pour nous écouter. C’est vrai que c’est toujours un plaisir quand les gens apprécient ouvertement ce que vous tu fais.
If your around the LA undergroud scene long enough you really get to know a lot of familiar faces. Compared to other cities in Europe the scene is still relatively small which allows you to try and build an intimate group of friends and followers, as well as trying push your music out to a bigger audience. You can only hope that you can produce music good enough to engage people’s interest so you can gradually build a following. It’s a great feeling when people openly appreciate something you have created.

What kind of people dance on your sound?
Souvent des gens heureux, ouverts d’esprits et qui aiment la musique.

Tu voyages souvent pour des events musicaux et festivals ?
Do you travel for event or festivals?
Oui très souvent. J’aime voir les artistes que j’admire en live. Les derniers events que j’ai prévu cette année sont le Coachella, le Sonar Festival et le Burning Man… Et sans-doute le Movement à Detroit aussi.
Yes all the time. I love attending events/festivals of artists I admire. Events planned so far this year are Coachella, Sonar Festival, Burning Man…..maybe Movement in Detroit too.

What are your next projects?
Je continue de travailler sur mes autres productions en ce moment et une collaboration qui m’excite vraiment est en préparation.
Working on another original at the moment, and also a collab that I’m very excited about.
